Drawing on media accounts of the controversial death of UK reality television star Jade Goody, and building on existing analyses of her death, we examine how cultural discourses actively work to construct deaths Nike High Cut Shoes as good or bad and to position the dying and those witnessing their death as morally accountable. By constructing Goody as bravely breaking social taboos by openly acknowledging death, by contextualising her dying as occurring at the end of a life well lived and by emphasising biographical continuity and agency, newspaper accounts serve to position themselves as educative rather than exploitative, and readers as information-seekers rather than ghoulishly voyeuristic. We argue that popular culture offers moral instruction in dying well which resonates with the messages from palliative care.© 2012 The Authors.
Exigent hemorrhage from pseudocysts and pseudoaneurysms is the most rapidly lethal complication of pancreatitis. Of eight patients with this unusual entity seen by us, all had acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage; two patients had intraperitoneal Nike Shox R4 bleeding as well. Preoperative visceral arteriograms accurately defined the bleeding lesion and greatly aided in planning operative strategy in six patients.
Multiple Phase I studies were carried out with amifostine in combination with chemotherapy for various neoplasms. Appropriate doses of amifostine were found to be 740 - 910 mg/m(2) in single-dose regimens and 340 mg/m(2) in multiple-dose regimens. In radioprotection, doses are generally 200 - 350 mg/m(2).
Using an endometrial echo cutoff less than 5 mm, sensitivity was 76% (95% CI, 65-85), specificity was 63% (95% CI, 51-73), positive predictive value was 67%, and negative predictive value was 72%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detection of benign masses was 0.79 (95% CI, 0.72-0.87). We were unable to determine a cutoff value below which benign endometrial pathology could be excluded.CONCLUSIONS: With an endometrial thickness cutoff of 5 mm a considerable amount of benign endometrial pathology in postmenopausal women with bleeding is missed, and SIS or hysteroscopy may be warranted.Comment inThe role of transvaginal ultrasound and sonohysterography in the evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding.
Fifty minutes were required to achieve a 3-log10 reduction at pH 5. Cryptosporidium oocysts were more difficult to inactivate. Only 10% were inactivated after a 20-minute exposure to iodine according to manufacturer's instructions; even after 240 minutes of exposure to iodine only 66-81% oocysts were inactivated.
