The dose-rate dependence of commercially available diode detectors was measured under both high instantaneous dose-rate (pulsed) and low dose rate (continuous, Co-60) radiation. The dose-rate dependence was measured in an acrylic miniphantom at a 5-cm depth in a 10 x 10 cm2 collimator setting, by varying source-to-detector distance (SDD) between at least 80 and 200 cm. The ratio of a normalized diode reading to a normalized ion chamber reading (both at SDD=100 cm) was used to determine diode sensitivity ratio for pulsed and continuous radiation at different SDD.
BACKGROUND: The use of springs in craniofacial surgery originated at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in 1997 as a way of remodeling the cranial vault postoperatively.METHODS: The hospital records of the first 100 operations involving spring placement were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic, perioperative, and postoperative data were recorded.RESULTS: Two hundred forty-six springs were used in 96 patients. Results for sagittal, metopic, bicoronal, multiple synostoses, and midface surgery are presented.
Radiographs of the wrist often do not include the entire third metacarpal, so the standard method for measurement of the carpal height ratio (the carpal height divided by the length of Nike Cortez Floral the third metacarpal) cannot be used. In this study, the ratio of the carpal height relative to the length of the capitate was evaluated for its suitability as a reproducible alternative. The revised carpal height ratio (the carpal height divided by the capitate length) was evaluated for reproducibility and clinical utility in both in vitro and in vivo studies: it was determined from the radiographs of ten cadaveric wrists; those of 100 wrists (fifty pairs) of normal volunteers, made with controlled positioning; those of 100 wrists, drawn at random from radiographs that had been previously interpreted as showing normal findings; and those of fifty wrists of twenty-nine Nike Janoski patients who had documented rheumatoid arthritis.
The bactericidal and fungicidal effects of five disinfectants and one combination of two disinfectants were tested using a modified Kelsey-Sykes method in which living microorganisms suspended in a sterilized yeast suspension ("dirty" conditions) and in sterile distilled water ("clean" conditions) were added to the disinfectants in three stages. Six bacteria and two fungal organisms were employed as test microbes. Results showed that formaldehyde was virtually inactive at the dilution tested (1/50), whereas phenol and the combination propylene-phenoxetol + benzalkonium chloride were moderately effective, the latter compound being better.
