Infant crying can elicit in others both a range of emotions and contrasting behavioral reactions, such as altruistic caregiving versus aggression. Variations in reactions to young infants' cries were examined in 60 children ranging in age from late preschool to preadolescence. Each child over-heard either a preterm or a full-term tape-recorded cry from an adjacent room.
Physical examination upon admittance revealed a distended abdomen without peritoneal signs. An abdominal X-ray series demonstrated a distended large bowel with an abundance of fecal contents, and suspected free air in the abdominal cavity. Due to these findings, an abdominal CT was performed, which demonstrated a huge fecaloma involving the descending and sigmoid colon.
In the absence of this manipulation, participants showed resistance to extinction after training with angry face CSs, but not after training with happy face CSs. Instructed extinction and electrode removal abolished fear conditioning regardless of the emotion expressed by the CS faces.
