Although the effectiveness of seat belts for reducing injury to rear seat passengers in traffic accidents has been well documented, the ratio of rear-seat passengers restrained by seatbelts remains lower than that of drivers or passengers in front seats. OBJECTIVE: To establish the extent of alcohol involvement in motor vehicle crashes occurring in Eldoret in western Kenya.DESIGN: A descriptive hospital-based study.SETTING AND SUBJECTS: Crash-involved patients aged 16 years and above presenting for treatment in all hospitals located in Eldoret town over a period of six months.METHODS: Casualties were enrolled consecutively.
